IBM Systems Magazine recently ran a worldwide survey of hundreds of customer locations to understand the Top 10 Concerns of IBM i Users. The number one concern was modernization, an area addressed well by CM First products, solutions and services. Here are the results:

58% listed modernization as their top concern, which included dealing with new languages and tools, not necessarily rewrite/replace. Additional concerns mentioned in the IBM App Modernization Redbook included modernizing databases, RPG, Web Services, GUI’s, development tools, etc.

51% listed high availability,

49% indicated a concern about skills beyond RPG, including Java, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Python, JavaScript and even COBOL,

40% are worried about mobile-enablement and meeting that challenge,

40% noted that data growth presented challenges,

39% were most concerned about trying to reduce spending,

Still important, but given a lower priority were:

29% – Systems Management,

17% – Improved SLAs

15% – Trying to go paperless,

Surprisingly, security came in at the bottom with only 5% most concerned about that issue.
